Within Italy he was billed as an 'out of control liberal.'  Based on the few bits which had reached outside Italy the world press tabbed him ‘a moderate with an open mind to change doctrine in those cases it places unfair restraints on the lives of innocent people.'

    Like the time he ordered his priests to sell their golden chalices and other implements of idol worship to build an orphange, to the times he had been caught baptizing born-out-of-wedlock children, to the many times he challenged the Church’s ban on contraception, to the times he ordered hospitals to admit partners of homosexuals into intensive care units, to that time he defended their right to adopt children, to that time - a month before his election - in  defiance of a papal decree he defended the first artificially inseminated child when other cardinals had condemned her, to that time as a pope he voiced his will for women parity in the Roman Catholic Church:

   "God is the Father, more so, the Mother." *

   There is the most prolific message of his ministry:

“We have made of sex the greatest of sins whereas it is nothing more than human nature and not a sin at all.” *

    Finally one has that time just a day before he was found dead when he threatened the Vatican treasures. Lifting a gold chalice to television cameras he asked his congregation:

"This chalice contains one hundred and twenty-two of the world's most pristine diamonds while children all over the world starve to death... Do you really think this is what Christ meant by His Church?" *

   In 1978, driven by Pope Paul VI’s encyclicals 'Liberation Theology' and 'Populorum Progressio' there were two fronts on which the CIA was faced by communism as a free democratic society—Central America and Italy.

   If Central America fell to communism, the Condor Nations of South America—those led by ruthless dictators—would  surely follow. If Italy fell to communism, Spain and much of Europe would surely follow.   It was in these parts of the world communism was raising its ugly head as the will of the people that was so dangerous to the United States and its capitalistic allies.

    Henry Kissinger sounded the alarm:

“Domination by communism as an autocracy of Moscow is not the issue. Communism as the will of the people as threatened in Central America and Italy is the issue. It would have terrible consequences for the United States and is the number one threat to its national security.” *

When Paul VI died the CIA joined right-wing factions in the Vatican (Opus Dei)  to force election of  an anti-communist pro-American Pope. When the avowed Marxist—John Paul I—was elected it struck a nerve of shattering proportions in the United States.

   A few days into his papacy the man who had led the priest-worker movement under Paul VI which made possible the rise of the Communist Party in the Italian polls announced his support for the revolution of the poor struggling against the brutal coalition of ruling juntas and the United States in Central America.

   A swarm of mini-Cubas loomed on the horizon in America’s backyard. In CIA headquarters in McLean Virginia the ball began to roll…
